Carpet, Hardwood or Vinyl Plank: Choosing the Right Floor

September 9, 2026 Henry's Construction

Choosing a floor is mostly a question of where it's going and how it will be used. There's no single best option, just the right one for each room.

Carpet is warm, quiet and soft underfoot, which makes it a good fit for bedrooms, stairs and apartments where noise travels to the neighbors below. It's also usually the most affordable per square foot. The trade-offs: it holds dust and stains more than a hard floor, and it needs to be stretched correctly at installation or it will ripple.

Hardwood and engineered wood give a classic look that adds value and can often be refinished many times. They're a strong choice for living areas and main rooms. Solid hardwood can swell or gap with moisture changes, so it isn't ideal for bathrooms or basements; engineered wood is more stable.

Laminate and luxury vinyl plank are the practical middle ground. They're durable, scratch-resistant and available in realistic wood looks, and vinyl plank in particular handles water well, which makes it popular for kitchens, bathrooms and rental properties. They don't have the long life or refinishing of real wood, but they cost less and install faster.

Whatever you pick, the subfloor decides how it turns out. A floor laid over an uneven, damp or loose subfloor will squeak, gap or lift. A good installer checks it first, levels and repairs it as needed, and leaves proper expansion gaps at the walls.

Finally, think about the finish work: baseboards, transitions between rooms and stairs are what make a new floor look like it belongs in the house.
