A remodel disrupts your home for a while, and the best way to make that easier is to know what's coming. Here's the usual order of work for a kitchen or bathroom.
Planning comes first. Decide what you want to change and what you can spend, then get the scope and price in writing. A clear estimate lists what's included, what isn't and which materials you're choosing. The more you settle before work starts, the fewer surprises later.
Order materials early. Cabinets, countertops, tile and fixtures can take weeks to arrive, and a job stalled waiting for a vanity or a custom countertop is the most common cause of delay. Ideally everything is on hand, or confirmed on a date, before demolition begins.
Demolition and repairs come next. Old cabinets, flooring and tile come out, and then we find out what's behind the walls — sometimes water damage, old wiring or uneven framing. That's normal in older homes, and it's why a small allowance for the unexpected is smart.
Anything involving plumbing, electrical, gas or permits needs the right licensed trades. On larger remodels we work alongside a general contractor so those pieces are done properly and inspected.
Then the rooms go back together in order: drywall, cabinets, tile and flooring, countertops, fixtures, and last of all paint and trim. Doing paint at the end protects it from the rest of the work.
The finish is a final walk-through, where we check everything with you, make any touch-ups and clean the space. If you're planning a kitchen or bathroom project in San Francisco or the Bay Area, call Henry's Construction at (415) 654-6558 for a free estimate.
